A section of a railway platform is used to describe where carriages stop.
How to map
Create a node 
onto the railway=platform or railway=platform_edge way in the middle of the section to be marked and add the tag railway:platform:section=* to it.
Other tags
There exists also the tag public_transport=platform_section_sign, which indicates the location of the corresponding sign itself.
