The key sides=* indicates the number of sides of the feature.
Most often used on advertising devices tagged with advertising=*, and in that case it indicates the number of sides of the advertising devices. A lot of them only have one side (for example and obviously wall billboard), but very often they have two sides (grounded billboard, totem, smaller board), sometimes three or four (big advertising sign for hypermarket).

Recommended use

sides=1: the advertising device has only one side, generally in front of the flow of vehicles or people, or parallel to this flow.
sides=2: the advertising device has two sides, generally one in front of the flow of vehicles or people, and one reverse to this flow.
sides=3: the advertising device has three sides, to display message in all directions, generally for big advertising sign of hypermarket.
sides=4: the advertising device has four sides, to display message in all directions, generally for big advertising sign of hypermarket.

sides=* can be used on nodes, or areas.
