Mechanical Edits/Russ (mechanical edit account)/Western Power Distribution Rename

From OpenStreetMap Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Western Power Distribution (WPD) was an electricity distribution network operator (DNO) in the UK. As of September 2022, it has been purchased by National Grid Plc and renamed. The consumer-facing brand is now simply "National Grid". The company name is "National Grid Electricity Distribution Plc" (NGED).

This operator covers four of Great Britain's 14 distribution network regions, and there is a separate subsidiary licensee company for each region (for example, "National Grid Electricity Distribution (East Midlands) Plc" is the statutory licensee for the East Midlands region).

There is a public domain dataset which defines the distribution network regions, which will be used in this edit.

Proposal

Power-related objects (substations, lines, poles, towers, cables, etc) with the tag operator=Western Power Distribution or variants, which fall within the WPD regions, will be edited to add/replace the following tags:

Additionally, the owner=* and owner:wikidata=* tags will be set to the appropriate licensee company dependent on the license region (for example owner=National Grid Electricity Distribution (East Midlands) Plc and owner:wikidata=Q114348127).

Depending on the number of objects, this edit will be carried out with at least one changeset per DNO region.

Consultation

This proposal was posted to the talk-gb list on October 2, 2022 (following some previous discussion).

Possible Future Work

WPD/NGED also provides open data with locations of all their major substations under an OGL variant license. A more comprehensive mechanical edit is planned in the future to match and enrich OSM data using this.
