About your Mapping Community

Tell us a little bit about your mapping community at the moment, some examples of details to include are below, but please provide us with any information you think is relevant. Please write 100-200 words

We are Team PPS (PPS: Parking Spot), a group of friends in Manila, Philippines working in the Information Technology industry, with fields from banking to manufacturing to e-commerce. Our OSM mapping activity will initially involve data in the Metropolitan Manila area, expandable to areas outside the metropolis.

We began our bicycle parking rack mapping activities (called “rack raids”) in January 2019. Much needs to be done about the amount of data relating to bike parking infrastructure in the country, and given the onslaught of COVID-19 and subsequent move to a “New Normal”, we need to be able to help our fellow Filipinos in easing the transition to other modes of transportation, one of which is to help them more easily find bike parking locations via an application.

As of now, we are a small group, consisting of four volunteers. Much of the work lies in documenting currently-existing bike parking locations, and eventually consolidating them together by defining in OpenStreetMap. More available bike-related data in OSM (including bike parking) will translate to more usability of the app and the richness of OSM data as well.

What do you need the grant money for?

We want to understand what you plan to buy, how much you plan to buy, and why this will help you to scale your community mapping efforts. There are two tables for you to fill in your response, and you may add more rows as needed. Some examples are in the table for your reference. You are welcome to use a different format in your response, but please make sure to include these details.

We are applying for the grant to help us build a bike parking application that will help locate the nearest bike parking facility. A common question that arises for bike commuters is, “where is the nearest bike parking?” Our app attempts to help answer that question in conjunction with enriching the OpenStreetMap database as well, so that we also contribute to OSM in the bigger scheme of things.

The app will also enable users to rate bike parking locations based on several subjective metrics (i.e., perceived safety, security factors, protection against sun/rain) which will help also determine overall ratings for these locations.

If you receive a grant, what do you aim to achieve?

It is recommended that this supports mission of the OSM Foundation and your local community. Please provide us with any information you think is relevant including the metrics you expect to achieve. Please write 100-200 words.

The team aims to achieve the following goals:

  • Create and deploy a bike parking application to accommodate the unique biking environment in Manila;
  • Help the local community with easing restricted/limited transport options (due to social/physical distancing rules) by promoting bike commuting as a good alternative;
  • Help promote more usage of the project as well as OSM overall.

The project will initially involve bike parking facilities within the Metropolitan Manila area (about 620 km2) where a majority of bike commuters work daily. We expect at least 15,000 existing bike commuters will be exposed to OSM via the app, and we will be actively promoting the commuters to update/add/contribute to OSM.

From the current dataset of only around 250 bike parking facilities across the metropolis, we expect to improve the dataset volume with more bike parking data to be consolidated and defined via OSM.

Endorsements

Community members are encouraged to endorse your project request here!

  • I endorse this project - very timely! - Mikko Tamura of Mapbeks
  • People should know where to park their bikes for security. Having them visible on the map will encourage inclusive/active mobility, and social distancing. - arnalielsewhere
  • This is a very urgent and important project, especially now during the pandemic. Please support this, dear OSMF! - mapmakerdavid
  • Since mass transport remains suspended in Metro Manila, using bikes is one of the best ways to go around the metro. This project is very relevant and timely so I fully support this! - Monica May
