OpenHistoricalMap/Projects/British Columbia
This project maps developments in British Columbia, both recent and in the past. As European settlement of British Columbia is comparatively recent compared to the rest of North America, more resources may be available online or through physical documents or recollections regarding the development of such settlements. Many of the original infrastructures, however, are lost due to a variety of reasons, such as the temporary nature of their construction, especially prevalent during the Cariboo gold rush.
Notes on Mapping
Date
When mapping features, always include start_date=* unless it is a natural feature, such as old-growth forests or lakes. If a start date is unknown, a reasonable arbitrary value can be given where the feature is known to exist, followed by the start_date:edtf=* tag where an estimate can be given for when the feature was built. Similarly, if a feature no longer exists, end_date=* and/or end_date:edtf=* should be used.
Source
As always, include a source, such as through source=* or start_date:source=*, when mapping so that the information regarding the feature can be verified. If possible, try to use a source other than Wikipedia. If the source is through local observation or survey, it should be labeled as such.
Parks
B.C. has more than 1000 provincial parks and protected areas[1], and most of them are still unmapped on OHM. Those that are in the list exist on the map but do not have any infrastructure within them yet (e.g. roads, parking lots, trails, restrooms).
| Site Name | Type | Start Date | End Date | Mapping Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Denman Island Provincial Park | Provincial Park | 2010[2] | ||
| Fillongley Provincial Park | Provincial Park | 1954[3] | ||
| Hemer Provincial Park | Provincial Park | 1980[4] | ||
| Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park | Provincial Park | 1972[5] | Some heritage structures and former railway tracks mapped | |
| Roberts Memorial Provincial Park | Provincial Park | 1980-05-22[6] | ||
| Sandwell Provincial Park | Provincial Park | 1988-06-16[7] |
Transportation
Highways
B.C.'s highway network has evolved constantly over the years, and decades after initial construction, many highways have been realigned to reduce curves or as a result of disasters. Many of these original alignments have not been mapped due to difficulties in identifying them.
Most highways do not have a route relation yet.
| Number/Name | Notes |
|---|---|
| 1 Trans-Canada Highway | Modern version mapped from Horseshoe Bay to Alberta border, and the freeway segment in Greater Victoria. Old route in the Fraser Valley and interior BC mostly unmapped. |
| 5 | Coquihalla Highway mapped |
| 7 | Sporadic mapping within Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley |
| 16 Yellowhead Highway | Most route realignments are unmapped, especially east of Terrace |
| 17 | Fully mapped |
| 19 | Modern version mapped. Old Island Highway route not fully mapped. |
| 29 | Mapped from Tumbler Ridge to John Hart Highway |
| 52 | Mapped from Tumbler Ridge to John Hart Highway |
| 91 | Fully mapped, except for route relation |
| 97 | Mapped from Prince George to Dawson Creek |
