OpenHistoricalMap/Projects/Disputed Boundaries
Introduction
The goal of this project is to map territorial disputes around the world, document the tagging and why it was tagged in such a manner and then eventually make some of the tags mainstream.
Tagging
I am proposing new tags for a relation that covers the disputed area. The disputed area should be part of the country that de jure controls it and part of the country that originally owned it. So if the disputing country doesn't control it then it remains in only one country boundary. If the disputing country occupies and controls the area then it becomes part of both countries.
type=zonezone=disputedadmin_level=2: to indicate if the dispute is country level or province leveldisputed_by=United States of America: optionaldisputed_by:wikidata=Q30: For renderers to render the disputed zone if it's not in both country relationsdisputed_type=annexation: Annexed by a foreign country; depending on control can be in one or both countries at the same timedisputed_type=occupation: Occupied by a foreign country and should sit in both country relationsdisputed_type=claim: Territory is claimeddisputed_status=unrecognised: Majority of the world does not agree that the annexation happened

San Juan Islands Dispute
The Oregon Treaty of June 15, 1846 divided British Canada and the United States down the center of the waterway between Vancouver and Oregon. However the waterway was divided by two straits on either sides of the San Juan Islands. Therefore both countries owned the San Juan Islands. After the Pig War of 1859 the boundary was arbitrated by the German Empire on October 21, 1872.
