The OpenStreetMap U.S. Tileservice is a free, cloud-based Web service of OpenStreetMap U.S. that provides OSM-based vector tiles updated several times a day, static raster tiles for raster layers such as hillshading, and miscellaneous map assets. It is free for use with low-volume, noncommercial community mapping projects. Access can also be arranged for higher-volume commercial use.

History

In 2022,
ZeLonewolf (on OSM · edits · contribs · heatmap · comments)
set up the tile generator and server to serve the needs of OpenStreetMap Americana, which until then had relied on MapTiler's hosted OpenMapTiles tileset.[1] The tile generator ran on an old repurposed laptop, generating a PMTiles file using Planetiler then uploading it to an Amazon S3 account on the free tier, which served up individual MVT tiles on the fly.[2] In 2024, the render server was moved to cloud infrastructure and transferred to OpenStreetMap U.S. as the Community Tileservice.[3] It became generally available to the public in 2025.[4]

Tilesets

The service provides several vector and raster tilesets. The vector tilesets are generated by Planetiler. The main basemap tileset conforms to the OpenMapTiles schema with several Planetiler extensions, such as support for all valid languages.
