Philadelphia Buildings & Addresses Import

From OpenStreetMap Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Philadelphia Buildings & Addresses Import is an import of the Building Footprints dataset from OpenDataPhilly covering the City of Philadelphia in the United States). The import is currently (as of 2023-05-18) at the planning stage.

Goals

Add building footprints where there currently are none. If there are already buildings mapped, 1) replace geometry of buildings with much better accuracy or detail in the external dataset (in JOSM, using Replace Geometry tool to preserve history), 2) if mapped buildings are accurate and detailed already, do nothing.

Include address information from the same dataset, reconfigured from one field "ADDRESS" (including housenumber and street name) into separate fields for addr:housenumber=* and addr:street=*. These fields will be included as tags on the building outlines.

Schedule

Timeframe is in planning stages. Once stages of community buy-in and import review are completed, a timeline will be added here.

Import Type

This will be a one-time import. Data will be manually reviewed and uploaded via JOSM in small batches.

Data Preparation

Data Reduction & Simplification

The Building Footprints Dataset geometry is not heavily detailed to the point of needing simplification.

Data fields in the original dataset will mostly be stripped from the dataset.

Tagging Plans

The "ADDRESS" field containing housenumber and street name will be calculated into separate fields of addr:housenumber=* and addr:street=*.

Some housenumbers are included as ranges; these ranges seem to include only the last two digits of the second number (eg 5822-24 instead of 5822-5824). Feedback is requested whether to leave these as-is and include them in the dataset, manually review and rewrite the second number, or strip them and add manually by survey.

Street names include abbreviations for prefixes and suffixes in the original dataset. These will be expanded. Care will be taken to differentiate between ST meaning Saint and Street. Some addresses are missing directional prefixes that are included on streets in OSM. These should be manually reviewed with a JOSM layer (e.g.
