Problem Statement

Currently there are two in-use and documented tagging systems for railway signals in Czechia.

This results in:

  • Inconsistent tagging of same features
  • Inconsistencies between Czech and foreign tagging systems
  • Increased complexity for data consumers

This proposal tries to partially unify the tagging of Czech railway signals, for now just focusing on sign signals.

Proposal

This proposal introduces a unified tagging scheme for common Czech railway signs signals based on regulation Správa železnic/D1[1].

It does not:

  • Modify the tagging of light signals in Czechia.
  • Modify tagging of sign signals directly relating to or placed on light signals in Czechia.
  • That shall be the subject of a follow-up proposal.

It proposes to:

  • Standardize tagging of Czech railway signs using the railway:signal:* namespace with prefix CZ-D1:name_of_the_signal
  • Standardize tagging of Czech railway milestones (which are technically also railway signals)
  • Introduce tagging for as-of-yet untagged Czech sign signals.
  • Introduce two new signal categories railway:signal:rack and railway:signal:wheel_scrubber.
  • Update parts of the CZ-D1:* tagging, most notably:
    • Introduce a new method of tagging groups of (distant) speed limit signs as a single node
  • Deprecate parts of the Cs-D1 tagging as documented by user HaPe-CZ, specifically parts concerning sign signals
  • Deprecate any other sign tagging styles like CZ or yes in Czechia

This tagging is intended for use on nodes with the tag railway=signal.


Rationale

This proposal is based heavily on one of the tagging systems for railway signals signs currently used in Czechia.

There are minor changes to the tagging of some signals to align with the categorization of similar signals with foreign countries (#Návěst stůj, #Návěst výstraha) or to use more appropriate suffixes to diferentiate different types of a sign (#Místo zastavení Os).

The tagging of speed_limit and speed_limit_distant signs is completely overhauled. It's proposed to use a family of suffixes :speed:speed_profile_name to allow for easy tagging of multiple different speed signs in one place (quite a common occurrence in Czechia). See the relevant chapters: #Rychlostníky (speed limit signs), #Předvěstníky (speed limit distant signs)


The proposal uses the category and property names suggested by the international base tagging schema.

It uses the CZ-D1: prefix, as suggested by the international base tagging schema. Furthermore it puts names of the signals after the prefix, e.g. CZ-D1:name_of_the_signal, similarly to Austrian tagging.

The name_of_the_signal part is in most cases a direct transcription of the the regulation names. That's because the Czech regulations do not provide stable symbolic identifiers. While the resulting can be somewhat verbose, they are unambiguous, stable, and directly traceable to the source documentation. Future user-facing editors are expected to present localized labels rather than requiring manual entry of the raw values.


The proposal tries not to use the :type suffix redundantly, e.g. in cases the where the main tag railway:signal:category=CZ-D1:name_of_the_signal uniquely identifies the signal.

Exception to this rule are the electricity and snowplow categories where the usage of :type is an established practice.


Tagging

The content of this chapter is bilingual, in English and in Czech, since Czechia is the target area of usage.

The tagging is intended for use on nodes with the tag railway=signal. As such, common tags used on railway signal nodes such as railway:signal:position and railway:signal:direction are omitted on this page.

Tuto návěst lze kombinovat i s jinými objekty na dráze. Podobné spojení tagů je možné i pro jiné návěsti, ale není časté, proto jej jinde nezmiňuji.

Rychlostníky (speed_limit signs)

Na českých železnicích je několik různých typů rychlostníků. Protože na jednom místě může být umístěno i více různých druhů rychlostníků, všechny používají stejné základní tagy, a liští se pouze v klíči, do kterého se zapisuje rychlost jimi návěstěná.
On Czech railways, several different types of speed limit signs are used. Since multiple types of speed limit signs may be located in the same place, they all share the same basic tagging scheme and differ only in the key under which the indicated speed is stored.

Rychlostník N

Toto je nejzákladnější rychlostník, proto se jeho rychlost zapisuje do :speed, ostatní rychlostníky používají suffixy jako :speed:jmeno_rychlostniku. (Viz další kapitoly.)

Směrové šipky na rychlostnících

Rychlostníky moho být doplněny o směrové šipky, to se značí vhodnou variací následujícího tagu. Levá a pravá se vztahuje ke směru jízdy vlaku, nikoliv orientaci OSM cesty
The speed limit signals' effect might be limited to only some turn directions, then the appropriate variation of the following tag is used. Left and right is relative to the direction of travel of the train, not the orientation of the OSM way.

Více rychlostníků na jednom místě

Pokud je na jednom místě více rychlostníků, ve většině případů je lze stejdnotit do jediného OSM vrcholu.
If there are multiple speed limit signs in one place, in most cases, it's possible to represent them using only one OSM node.

Pro některé skupiny rychlostníků ale potřeba využít více OSM vrcholů:

  • Pro sloupky s rychlostníky do obou směrů je stále nutné přidat více OSM vrcholů.
  • Pokud jsou v jednom místě jen některé rychlostníky umístěny na stožáru trakčního vedení (railway:signal:catenary_mast=yes).
  • Pokud jsou v jednom místě jen některé rychlostníky s tabulkou lokomotivy.
  • Pokud jsou v jednom místě jen některé rychlostníky platné v určitém směru.

In some situations more than one node is necessary to tag the whole group:

  • For poles with speed limit signs in both directions, two OSM nodes, one for each direction, must be used.
  • If only some of the signs in a group are attached to a catenary mast (railway:signal:catenary_mast=yes).
  • If only some of the signs have the sign with a locomotive
  • If the turn_direction applies only to some of the signs in group.


Předvěstníky (speed_limit_distant signs)

Tagování předvěstníků je analogické tomu, jak se tagují rychlostníky.
Speed limit distant sign tagging is analogous to how speed limit signs are tagged.

Všechny typy předvěstníků používají stejné základní tagy, liští se pouze v klíči, do kterého se zapisuje rychlost jimi návěstěná.
All types of speed limit distant signs share the same basic tagging scheme, and differ only in the key under which their indicated speed is stored.

Za poznámku stojí, že všechny předvěstníky mají vyznačenu pouze desetinu předvěstěné rychlosti. (Tj. předvěstník s číslici 6, předvěstí rychlost 60.) Do OSM se pak vždy zapisuje skutečná rychlost, nikoliv číslice na předvěstníku.
Note that all speed limit distant signs display a number equal to the indicated speed divided by ten. (For example, a sign showing 6 indicates a speed limit of 60.) In OSM, always store the actual speed indicated by the sign, not the number physically displayed on it.


Předvěstník N

Žlutý trojúhelník postavený na vrchol s černým číslem značícím desetinu předvěstěné rychlosti.

Sklonovníky (slope signs)

Návěstidlo má tři varianty, pro stoupání, klesání a rovinu. (Viz podkapitoly.)

Lenght is the black number from the sign. Incline key shall contain the red number from the sign. No units should not be included in the values of the keys; dot should be used as the decimal separator.

Impact on Data Consumers

To my knowledge, the only site that consumes or renders these tags as of today is the OpenRailwayMap-vector [1].

This proposal is very similar to the schema ORM-vector uses already. Small changes would be necessary for these signals: #Návěst stůj, #Návěst výstraha, #Místo zastavení Os. Bigger changes would be necessary to support the new speed_limit signs schema.

I am planning to create a PR with the necessary changes to update to the schema in this proposal.
