Motivation

The author is proposing this feature so that they can tag a number of charcoal kilns in their local area. They have chosen to opt for a more general tag of kiln rather than charcoal_kiln as they feel the use or purpose of a kiln can be defined using further related tags which are proposed below. They also believe that the general kiln tag serves the community better as it is more robust and allows others to build upon it for their own tagging purposes e.g. a pottery kiln.

More about kilns can be found on Wikipedia

Instances / Significance

Charcoal: Worldwide charcoal production is in the the 10s of millions of tons yearly, the vast majority of which is produced in Asia and Latin America using kilns of one type of another. As such there are a lot of charcoal kilns in the world despite the very low number marked on OSM.

There are many other types of kiln used for many different purposes world wide some of these include:

  • charcoal
  • pottery
  • glass
  • limestone (quicklime)
  • bricks
  • drying
    • firewood (from wet or damp lumber)
    • tobacco leaves
    • malted barley / hops (for brewing)
  • smelting
    • ore (for the production of various metals)

Safety

It would be useful to know the locations of some kilns as they can give off a large amount of smoke (especially charcoal kilns) which can be dangerous or disorientating for people in the nearby area. It has been know for people to mistake their operation for fires and inform fire fighting services. You may also consider kilns as a hazard as they can get very hot. Their purpose is also not very obvious to the untrained eye (as some just look like a round metal drum) and as such can invite the investigation of curious passers by, you do not want to touch a lit kiln if you value your fingers, a sealed charcoal kiln shows no obvious signs that it is very hot!

Rendering

This is up to the implementation of each renderer but I would suggest a black round drum with a flame in the centre of the drum. I have had a go at creating this as can be seen below (Any better interpretations are welcome):

Key Value Comment
product=* *

The output or production purpose of the kiln.

Proposed values:
  • charcoal
  • pottery
  • glass
  • bricks
  • quicklime

This tag was chosen over the:
capacity=* number Number of objects that can be placed into the kiln e.g. 10 pots
volume=* number The metric cubic volumetric capacity of the kiln in meters cubed. e.g 7. This tag may be more appropriate than capacity in cases where a large number of items are placed inside the kiln and it would be more useful to show the area the input occupies e.g. wood, or ore.
operator=* * The operator's name.
fuel=* * The fuel used to heat the kiln.

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. This seems to be the right tag for the many historic objects that we call Kalkofen and Kohlemeiler in German. But I think that capacity=* should be the volume (as for man_made=reservoir_covered etc.), and a hard limit of 5x5m is just ridiculous. --Fkv 19:47, 23 September 2012 (BST)
    • tbh the 5x5 was just from the template I copied the structure for this page from, I think you are right and have removed it. The volume is a bigger issue as I did not want a tag that in some cases meant volume and in others means the number of items that can be placed inside as I thought it would lead to ambiguities if ever parsed by a computer. Also according the descriptions on the capacity=* page it seems to point to it being a unit of occupancy rather than volume measurement. I was not aware of its use as a volume as in the description you mention. I am open to thoughts on this but I get a bad feeling when a tag value is to be interrupted in different ways depending on other tags it is listed with. --Haveyougotanypets 20:29, 23 September 2012 (BST)
