Proposal

A Well is a shaft into ground for obtaining water (or something else like mineral oil) from an underground source, usually lined with bricks or stones.

As there are also other meaning for "well" the tag should be more precise. It would be better to use "well_water".

Rationale

For fire brigades the tag "man_made=well_water" is an important icon. Usually it defines the location to fetch water from underground while fighting against forest fires. There are different types of wells used for this purpose:

1) Wells where the fire brigades needs to put their own suction pipe into, 2) and other where just the suction pump needs to be connected to.

Type 1) wells are also used by farmers to water their plants.

Rendering

For the icon this different types needs not to be differentiated as fire brigades usually comes full equipped able to access both types. A possible icon should be similar as used by fire brigades.

Discussion

The tag "well" should not be used for for the beginning of streams. A tag "waterway=spring" would be better choice for this (see Proposed_features/Spring) Water well are also very important in arid and semi-arid regions as a water source.

Maybe some additional information, like:

  • type of casing
  • dug or drilled
  • max. discharge
  • artesian well

  • man_made=water_well seems more natural than man_made=well_water, which looks backwards to me. What other kinds of well are there? man_made=oil_well? 80n 06:11, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
i approve this proposal but i would choose also man_made=water_well. sounds better and seems to be the correct spelling - for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_well --Patzi 01:18, 10 April 2008 (BST)
why is this abandoned? I think this is a very important feature. A lot of European cities have wells , they help as orientation. Some are tourist attractions (some Italian cities). In North Africa these are vital.
--it is abandoned because it's a duplicate of man_made=water_well.
