The tag man_made=petroleum_well is used to map an oil well or gas well: a boring in the Earth that is designed to bring petroleum oil or gas to the surface.

An oil or gas well on land may be recognized by the wellhead and a "Christmas tree" assembly of valves and pipes on top, or it may have a pumpjack or similar pumping rig over it. Petroleum wells under water will usually have an production platform or offshore oil platform"above the surface of the water, though this may not be directly located over the wells.

How to map

Set a node node and add man_made=petroleum_well

Add substance=oil/gas to specify whether crude oil or natural gas are produced, if known.

If the well is marked with a reference number or code, add ref=*. Most gas and oil wells do not have a name=*

Surrounding area

The area area around the well which is used for oil production can be mapped with landuse=industrial. If there is a pumpjack, this can be mapped as an area with man_made=pumping_rig
