Hi there, I am also looking for the best way to tag "crèches" in France. Any idea when we'll have a validated tag?

Keep kindergarten and add min_age=* and max_age=*.
(thibdrev) I don't think we really need this min_age / max age tage in France, since "crèches" are all from a few months to 3 years. But I might be missing something. But yes, it could be added if needed.
Even if you create a french subtag that implies the age, it would help from a global perspective to see what age group a particular institution is for.
(thibdrev) Right, since kindergarten:FR inherits from kindergarten, it will automatically include this tag. And this makes sense since I've also read on Wikipédia Crèche (enfant) that a "multiaccueil" is often a "crèche"+"halte-garderie" and hence can host children older than 3.

In France (world) we've currently got:

Key:Value taginfo (France) taginfo (world) comment
amenity=kindergarten 3878 140417 Mostly used to tag "École maternelle" (which in France is school for children over 3 years), not "crèches". It is usually combined with school:FR=maternelle, in accordance with the French wiki.
For Germany, the min_age limit is blurring, there are a lot "KiTa = Kindertagesstätte", literally day place for children, with educational programme and starting (depending on the particular house), with min_age 0, 1, or 3, ending with max_age 6 (switch to school) or 10-12 (afternoon care for primary school kids).
(thibdrev) I'm thinking that the recommended couple amenity=kindergarten + school:FR=maternelle is wrong. "École maternelle" in France is part of what's called "École primaire" or simply "École" (together with "École élémentaire"). "École maternelle" should be tagged as amenity=school + school:FR=maternelle, leaving amenity=kindergarten for crèches. Others on the school:FR discussion page seem to agree on that.
amenity=nursery 355 524 Used to tag "crèches" but nothing yet on the French wiki. The most used tag for "crèches" in France.
Nursery is a very ambigious term, can be a baby room in a house, a daycare, or even a plant nursery or wildlife breeding. Not recommended for tagging.
amenity=childcare 266 3586 Used to tag "crèches" in accordance with the French wiki.
The kindergarten wiki claims the childcare proposal was rejected.
(thibdrev) Agreed. Rejected twice. There is a "2.0" proposal since 2013 but doesn't seem to be updated. And kindergarten is by far more used.
amenity=creche 19 88 Used to tag "crèches" but nothing yet on the French wiki.

I am currently thinking in using either:

The last one seems the most interesting to me, since:

  1. It makes use of a validated tag: amenity=kindergarten; and
  2. Crèches in France can be of different types, and most crèches in France already tagged do specify this information in their name=*. But the type information should be stored in a specific key, not in the name=*. Pretty much like the school:FR=* already in use.

Therefore we would have:

Instead of currently often having:

Yes I like your proposal to have amenity=kindergarten as the umbrella key, and make specifications in subtags. You can also add min_age=* and max_age=* to give age limits.
