amenity vs leisure

Let me the first to raise this...

I was searching the wiki to find a suitable tag for a club I'm mapping, and this one seems ideal. However, it looks like Nominatim already has rules covering amenity=social_club, which has (according to tagstat) about 7 times as many uses than leisure=social_club at present, though both are relatively low. If this does get adopted raise a trac ticket to help keep Nominatim working as smoothly as it does presently. --EdLoach 08:42, 19 August 2010 (BST)

I'm not too bothered whether its amenity= or leisure=. I suppose amenity would be consistent with things like pub/bar/restaurant. But I think amenity is usually for things useful/important to the general public, which a members-only club doesn't really fit into. Plus some people are complaining that there's too much under key:amenity anyway...
I noticed amenity=social_club is currently used a bit more, but its only about 100 or so objects, which could easily be changed. I don't know if there's any applications/renderers using them anyway (other than Nominatim). --Vclaw 20:07, 20 August 2010 (BST)
Since amenity=social_club is already in use, there doesn't seem much to be gained from creating an equivalent tag and changing all the old ones. Yes, there are too many amenity=* tags, but that's a reason not to add new ones, rather than to change existing ones. Changing the existing tags in the database will break applications that are already using that tag, so you'd have to provide evidence of a concrete benefit of the change. Don't worry too much about the exact words used in a tag -- the meaning behind them is more important, and I think your documentation in this proposal applies exactly to the existing tag. Why not just use the work you've done to document existing practice? Jonathan Bennett 00:42, 27 September 2010 (BST)

One way to think about it is which landuse you'd use. landuse=amenity makes no sense, so for amenities you need to use something else like landuse=retail. But here landuse=leisure would make perfect sense, so why not leisure=social_club? --NE2 21:13, 20 August 2010 (BST)

Community_centre

Isn't this almost the same as Tag:amenity=community_centre? --Kslotte 14:14, 27 August 2010 (BST)

No, since it's not open to the public. --NE2 23:09, 27 August 2010 (BST)

club=social

A proposal for a club=* tag was made and seems (to this newbie) to have been approved: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Club https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:club --eteb3 09:46, 14 October 2018 (BST)
