Proposal

This proposal is self-explanatory: it is just a standard to tag salons (or clinics) specialized on removing head lice on premise.

These salons exist in several countries and are usually marked with text on signs.

Rationale

These centres are extremely specialized, making them difficult to tag, and even more difficult to search on OpenStreetMap. For this reason, a standard is necessary.

Tagging them as a clinic is ambiguous, and (on English-speaking countries, possibly on most places) they should not be tagged as hair salons because regular hair salons are explicitly forbidden from treating clients with head lice, according to local health and safety regulations.

No other features on the map depend on this.

Examples

Head lice removal centres are easy to find on the internet using web search engines. It is difficult to figure out the number of these centres out there per country (or their density

You may find examples on English-speaking countries at https://www.myhairhelpers.com/ and https://licetroopers.com/lice-treatment-center/.

These salons also exist in several provinces on Spain. A single brand, https://helppiojitos.com/ lists more than 15 centres over continental Spain. (Note that there are English and Catalan versions of the same page, but they show different results.)

Tagging

A new value for healthcare=* looks like the better option because:

  • healthcare=clinic is non-specific and requires a healthcare:speciality=head_lice_removal tag, which is harder to remember and to type. It is also misleading to tag as healthcare=clinic because staff on head lice removal centres need not be medical practicioners.
  • amenity=* and shop=* are even less specific than healthcare=*.
  • office=* is the wrong choice because, at the very least, these centres need equipment for the staff to explore the patient's head while they are sitting.
  • man-made=* was designed for structures and not intended for business offices in regular buildings.

Applies to

I've typed head lice removal centre so many times that it's lost all meaning to me now.

Rendering

Assuming this proposal is accepted and there are hundreds of thousands of these centres around the world, a louse icon like the one found at https://thenounproject.com/term/louse/41067/ (see here) would be ideal.

The standard rendering for healthcare=* points (a cross on Mapnik with the default skin) is fine.

Features/Pages affected

Only healthcare=* and healthcare=head_lice_removal, if this proposal is accepted with no changes.

External discussions

This proposal was originally brought up on http://gis.19327.n8.nabble.com/Tagging-specialized-head-lice-removal-salons-td5972738.html

There was no consensus on that thread and there were only 20 replies, so make sure to check all alternatives by other authors before commenting (or voting).

Originally we were also discussing hair salon/head lice removal centre hybrids but I have not found a confirmed example of one existing yet.
