Motivation

In many countries (in Russia, other ex-soviet countries, and even in UK, see discussion page) in the cities there are vast areas occupied by garage boxes. It's a special type of city landscape (see pictures below). Main purpose is to store cars, but frequently, some boxes can be used for different purpose - different kinds of things can be stored by owners in the garages (old furniture, crops, etc). Generally, only owners of garages has access to this area. In most cases such territory is guarded by a watchman with dogs.

Special tag is required to map such areas, because amenity=parking (opposite proposal) even with additional tags does not reflect all the peculiarities of this type of city landscape. It's not a public parking (as it is required by Tag:amenity=parking), and it not interesting for city visitors and even natives unless they are owners of the garage boxes there.

These in Australia are known as 'self storage units". Usually they are for rental, and you can rent different size boxes according to your need.

Why not building=garage

This is not a single structure, the complex can consist of hundreds or even thousands of buildings.

Numbers

These areas are quite common in Russia, I believe about 5%-10% of the territory of Sergiev Posad (quite typical provincial town) is occupied by such landscape.

Rendering

Up to particular renderer. (Yellow polygon is suggested).

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. amentiy=* is a subtype of landuse=*. With amenity=parking exists a already approved tag for a possibility of parking. So it would be better to extend parking=*. --Vsandre 09:40, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

The vote is ended. Results: 23 votes yes and only 3 no. So the feature is approved.

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. Sad that I missed the "vote" because the class "landuse" is inappropriate here. Such garages areas are always in urban zones already tagged as landuse=residential. What you create here is a superposition of two landuse polygones where it should be exclusive. This will force contributors to add a tag "layer" or force renderers to take a special handling of this tag. As it was said above, the class amenity is much more appropriate. -- Pieren 10:34, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
