A photo studio is a place where a photographer can minutely control lighting conditions for the purposes of taking photographic pictures. Either the studio is rented or you hire a photographer who uses the studio. shop=photo_studio denotes a location housing one or more such photo studios.

Service

Frequently, a photo studio is the personal workspace of a photographer. shop=photo_studio does not indicate any subject restrictions though, e. g. a studio may be used exclusively for product photography. For the purposes of OSM, however, a shop=photo_studio must be verifiable thus the studio must be at least accessible to customers, which means portrait photography (for humans, sometimes also pets) is one of the subjects covered (if the studio cannot be rented). Some photo studios serve walk‑ins (during opening_hours=*), others require prior appointment.

In contrast to shop=photo, customers cannot “use” a shop=photo_studio without the photo studio part. A shop=photo may house a photo studio, too, but you are not obligated to use the studio: e. g. you can just buy photographic equipment (without using the studio or drawing on a photographer’s services).
