A facility where animals are bred, usually to sell them. This tag is mainly intended for pet breedings, but it can be used for any kind of animals. You should use this tag if breeding is the primary activity of the facility, otherwise see Breeding as secondary activity.

Tagging

Tag Description
amenity=animal_breeding Mandatory, the main tag to identify a place as an animal breeding.
animal_breeding=<animal>[;<animal>...] Optional, it lists the kinds of animals bred in the facility.

For more info on how to set <animal>, see Kinds of animals bred.

name=* Optional, it specifies the name of the facility.
operator=* Optional, it specifies the company, corporation, person or any other entity who is in charge the facility.

This tag should be used to tag the whole facility area. If within this area you can distinguish buildings, lawns, courtyards, fences, you can tag them properly with building=yes, landuse=grass and so on. In case of cattle breedings, landuse=meadow or landuse=farmland should be used too, however they are probably outside the facility perimeter. Note that a cattle breeding normally is a farm, so it should be tagged accordingly: see Breeding as secondary activity for details.

Kinds of animals bred

To specify which kinds of animals are bred in the facility you have to insert them in the value field using the common English singular form (e.g. dog and not dogs, bird and not birds).

Multiple kinds of animals: you can set multiple values at the same time if the facility breeds more than one kind of animals, for example dogs and cats. In this case you have to separate values with semicolon ";".

<animal> Animals bred
dog dogs
cat cats
horse horses
gamecock roosters trained for cock fighting
<user defined> Accepts one or more kinds of animals you can specify. You should prefer commonly used values according to Taginfo

Scientific name: If you want to specify the scientific animal's name you can add additional tags species=*, or genus=*, or taxon=*. This is optional, the main tag is as described above.

Breeding as secondary activity

A structure of any type with its own main purpose (e.g. a veterinary, an animal shelter, a farm, or anything else) can breed animals as secondary activity. In this case the facility should be tagged according to its main purpose (e.g. amenity=veterinary, amenity=animal_shelter, landuse=farmyard) and then add a secondary tag that is:

Tag Description
animal_breeding=yes/no/<animal>[;<animal>...] The structure breeds the listed animals; use yes only if you don't know which animals are bred.
For more info on how to set <animal>, see Kinds of animals bred.
