A dip hazard is a dip in the road which may be hazardous to motorists. This tag covers both artificial dips and natural dips in the road that form over time as the roadway deteriorates.

For speed dips or rumble strips, see traffic_calming=* instead. Traffic calming devices themselves should not normally be tagged with hazard=dip.

How to map

Dip hazards may be mapped in the following ways:

  • Place a node node at the location of the dip hazard traffic sign, tagged traffic_sign=hazard (or code) + hazard=dip.
  • Tag a node node along a highway=* way way at the location of the sign
  • Tag the section way of highway=* where the dip hazard is present.

Signage examples

The gallery below shows what dip hazard signage looks like in various countries.
