The tag historic=building may be used to map a former smithy or forge, especially when it has since found a different use (garage, shed, part of a residence) or is disused and falling into disrepair.
They are often found at cross roads and near a water source like waterway=stream.
How to map
Ideally, draw the building (part) (see Relation:building) as an area
and add historic=smithy, give your sources such as historic maps or street level imagery which identify the building as a former or current smithy. T mark the building as that of a purpose built smithy that is still in good repair, use building=smithy. If it is a ruin, use building=ruins + historic:building=smithy.
Additional tags for the building
name=*orloc_name=*, usually the last name of the last blacksmith, as in "Vaughans' Forge" (careful about the apostrophe, but usually more than one family member was involved)roof:shape=*(usually gabled)roof:material=*heritage=*if it is protected by being listed on a heritage databaseref=*reference to the heritage database such asref:IE:niah=*in Irelandimage=*wikimedia_commons=*wikidata=*- Don't hesitate to create a Wikidata entry and add local history sources, if you know of any.
There might be commemorative plaques (historic=memorial + memorial=plaque) on the building or nearby which might provide a start_date=* and/ or the name of the last blacksmith and an end_date=*.
Many smithies have horseshoe shaped entrances which may be mapped by adding the entrance as a node
with the tags entrance=yes and entrance:shape=horseshoe.
Check whether there is a historic=tyring_platform nearby and map it, if it is.
