Status: de facto

A single dwelling usually inhabited by a single household, such as a single family or small group of people sharing a kitchen and living space.

Houses forming half of a semi-detached pair, or one of a row of terraced houses, should share at least two nodes with joined neighbours.

More specific options

building=house is a fairly general tag so for some kinds of houses there are more specific tag options available

  • Countries where houses usually share walls may find it useful to use the tag building=detached for a house that is free-standing (not sharing any walls with other house)
  • For other residential accommodations, see building=residential and building=apartments.
  • A row of terraced houses (i.e. houses which share two walls with adjacent houses) can initially be tagged as building=terrace, but it's preferable to then split them into individual houses. Make sure neighbouring houses share at least two nodes.
