Status: de facto

A house that is attached to another house on one side. Also known as a duplex.

Note that duplex buildings sometimes mapped as one building or two connected buildings. The building=semidetached_house is in use for both. So the current use of this tag is not clearly differentiating between them.

Interconnected homes of more than two units (commonly called a "triplex", "quadruplex", or more generally a “multiplex” should be tagged as building=terrace or building=house, depending on the configuration of the units.

Alternate tagging

Some mappers prefer to map this as building=house + house=semi-detached.
