A tag for a decommissioned  railway car (in some parts of the world called railcar, freight car, coach, wagon or waggon) which has become a tourist attraction and generally remains in one place. The rail car can be any type of rolling stock, but not a locomotive.

This can also be used for anything that is even remotely rail-bound, like experimental rocket-sleds, monorail cars etc that are set on a pedestal.

For locomotives, use historic=locomotive

How to Map

Place a node node at the location of the railway car or draw an area area for the outline and use historic=railway_car. You can also tag it with name=*. If the railway car is a tourist attraction, then add tourism=attraction.

Some railway cars are located in a building. Draw an area area, and add building=*. Set the railway car separately as a point node or an area area inside the building. Sometimes, a railway car is used as a building. You can use building=* on such a vehicle, but only if it is truly stationary (e.g. it has fixed plumbing and power lines connected to it, or has had its wheels removed).

Additional tags

  • name=* – The name of the carriage, if it has one.
  • description=* – Can be used to provide additional information about the railway car to the map user.
  • railway_car=* – Use freight for a (former) freight car, passenger for a passenger car, caboose for a caboose or brake van, or come up with your own, more detailed value.
  • operator=* – The (current) operator (i.e., maintainer or exhibitor) of the carriage.
  • start_date=* – Build date of the carriage.
  • wikidata=* – Individual museum carriages may have a Wikidata item which can be tagged here.
  • wikipedia=* – Individual museum carriages may have a Wikipedia page which can be tagged here.
  • tourism=attraction – To mark it as a tourist attraction.
  • heritage=* – If registered by an official heritage organisation.
  • ref=* – Reference number or code of the carriage, if applicable.
  • gauge=* – Standard distance between the rails it ran on.

If the railway car has some kind of amenity=* like a bar, restaurant or tourism=* like a hotel or a museum, it can be tagged as a separate node with its own name and further information.

Remarks

Don't use building=* on trains, even if they remain in one place, but are capable of being moved by rail.
