The tag describes land occupied by auto wreckers. An auto wrecker is an area set aside for the long-term disposal or recycling of wrecked vehicles. In the USA, this is a specific example a junkyard, junk yard or salvage yard. Also known as a scrapyard in British English. Though all this terms are used for wider class of objects.
These places sometimes offer the opportunity to buy parts from the junked cars, though nowadays it is rarely done by individuals.
Note: For scrap yards, places where scrap is sorted and processed, use industrial=scrap_yard! Those two tags are not synonymous.
