Status: in use

The purpose of this tag is to indicate that an intersection of two roads is known to be controlled, rather than simply not mapped, or mapped further away in a manner that requires an inexact search of nearby objects along the OSM graph. Putting junction=controlled at the intersection point allows users of data to know that nearby traffic control applies to the intersection, and can enable proper estimation of safety or time penalties along the way for pedestrian, cycling, and vehicle routing.

This tag is effectively the opposite of junction=uncontrolled, where each affirmatively maps an intersection's status. This tagging scheme is primarily used by only one or two people with this page documenting the in-use tagging.

Usage

As a general rule, this tag should only be used at junctions where the traffic control devices are mapped at stop bars, or otherwise mapped, but not at the location where two ways intersect. A common example would be a large intersection where traffic signal nodes may be placed at stop bars, sometimes quite far away.

This tag should *not* be used on intersections where any road leading in does not have a traffic control device - those intersections should use highway=priority instead.
