"bailiff" is the most popular English translation for the office called "Gerichtsvollzieher" in German, "komornik sądowy" in Polish, or "huissier de justice" in French. Their basic function is to execute civil judgments (I owe you money, you get a judgment, and now you ask the "bailiff" to go attach my earnings, etc). The details vary a lot from jurisdiction to jurisdiction; in Germany they are court officials, in Belgium they are self-employed professionals with certain executive powers (like notaries). In the United Kingdom there are several types of Bailiff with different duties, but generally related to depts and property. See [1]
