Denotes a highway=* with no actual speed limit, one where one is able to drive as fast as one physically can. This is not to be confused with an implicit (unsigned) speed limit which still apply when no other limit is given.

Difference to implicit speed limits

There's a difference between the lack of a speed limit and an implicit speed limit. Many legislations limit vehicles to a certain speed when no other known speed limits are put in place (both explicitly through a sign but also implicitly like a built-up area) and should be specified as such in maxspeed=*. Only few legislations permit drivers to drive with no speed limit under certain circumstances (e.g. Germany).

In other words: The lack of a maxspeed=* does not (necessarily) imply maxspeed=none.

Use on nodes

Since maxspeed=* is valid on nodes in combination with traffic_sign=*, maxspeed=none is sometimes used to denote traffic signs which lifts the current speed restriction.

Country specific tagging

Germany

In addition to being the implicit speed limit on highway=motorway (and generally not needed to be tagged as such), the 100 km/h speed limit is also lifted on rural roads which are either dual carriageways (regardless of the amount of lanes) or single carriageways with at least two lanes on each direction.

In addition, bicycles are lifted from implicit speed limits and only have to honour explicit speed limits (e.g. maxspeed:type=sign), speed limit zones (e.g. zone:maxspeed=DE:30) and pedestrian infrastructure (e.g. highway=living_street).
