route=portage is used to designate a route relation for an individual
portage, a route where people carry small boats (such as canoes and kayaks) over land on foot. Portage routes allow paddlers to transfer between waterways and bypass dams and other obstructions.
Allowed access for portaging is tagged separately: on individual highway=* features using the portage=* tag.
How to map
See relation:route for general guidance on creating routes in OSM. For a portage route, create a
relation with the primary tag type=route and the subtag route=portage. Each member of the relation should be a routable
way with a positive portage=* tag, such as portage=yes or portage=designated. Do not include paddlable water features such as waterway=link in the route.
When not to use
route=portage assumes route users are walking, and are either carrying their boats by hand or with a hand cart (if allowed and possible). The tag should not be used for situations where boats are transported by truck, rail car, bicycle, or other vehicle.
