faculty=* is used both on features representing faculties and on related higher-education features to record their faculty or broad academic affiliation. Usage is not fully consistent: some mappers use it as the main tag identifying a faculty, while others combine it with university=faculty or feature tags such as office=university and building=university.
When combined with office=university, it may describe a faculty office, dean's office, secretariat, or similar contact point.
How it is used
On a feature representing a faculty, the value often indicates its academic field or grouping. On an institute, department, office, student association, or other related feature, it may instead record faculty affiliation. It is also sometimes found on university buildings and campuses associated with a particular faculty.
Usage is not standardised. Typical values for academic fields use lower-case English words, with underscores between words. The displayed name is normally recorded in name=* and the mapped feature's own reference in ref=*.
Distinct constituent fields may instead be represented as semicolon-separated values, for example faculty=sport;social_sciences. Consider using single broader value when a suitable combined field exists, for example faculty=theology for a joint faculty of catholic theology and protestant theology.
faculty=* should be avoided on buildings shared by multile faculties or in other ambiguous situations.
