See how your area is doing?

I feel that that is not the best name for the section, and a more appropriate name could or should be found. I however have no ideas on one myself and wonder if anyone else feels the same way? EricITO 10:27, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Portal not Project

I believe this page should not be a project as such, but more of a portal to projects in England. In it's current form it is far too long, and disorganised to find the information you are looking for. It should contain a brief overview of the projects taking place along with an organised list of said projects with their associated links.

I'm working on a re-write of the page at User:Ashimema/Sandbox. Please feel free to help contribute, my aim is to replace this page eventually with a more concise organised version, with some bits of the information here moved to new pages.

Cleaned

Resolved: Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 14:56, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

OK, I've got a basic page setup! I'm now going through this page and trying to "Clean" up each of the sections/links form within it so that each page is correctly categorised. Then my re-written page will simply direct you to the England category and finding your specific place should be simple from there! I still believe this page should be kept simple, with little "baggage" information, mainly used as a portal with some basic status information as required.

Completed Work on this page, Split sections away, and created more of a portal structure. User:Ashimema 17:14, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Postcode areas

Fairly confused by this talk page and it's "threads" of conversation. I would agree with Harry Woods idea of drastically cleaning up this page by dropping the post code section in favour of listing the top 10 highest population cities. User:Ashimema 00:29, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Considering the uncertainty that exists around certain counties, may I issue a plea that we keep the postcode sorting of this section? It may well make sense to divide it onto separate pages alphabetically, however. Longwayround 20:39, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

What uncertainty is that out of interest? PeterIto 10:22, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
For example, is Blackburn with Darwen part of Lancashire? Road signs suggest it isn't. The population would consider that it is. Is Dagenham part of Essex? Is Kingston in Surrey? Postcodes are indisputable. In my opinion, the postcode arrangement is useful, although it would be better if it were split into more manageable sections. Longwayround 15:01, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
In response to an earlier question, yes Blackburn with Darwen is evidently officially part of Lancashire [1] and Dagenham is a town in the 'the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham'[2]. The signposts may say a different story, possibly they are out of date, but the official position does appear to be clear. I realise that there are also historical changes, possibly Degenham was once in Essex, however the current legal and organisational position seems very clear. PeterIto 00:08, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Free data purists might argue that we shouldn't be organising anything by postcode, because the system isn't free. Mind you we do have a pretty good idea which postcode a town is in based on Free The Postcode and the postcode map based on it.

The main problem though, is that most of the progress information and map images in that section are very out of date. It takes a long time to load this big table full of images, and it's mostly useless information!
I have removed all the images from the Postcode Areas section many of which were very out-of-date. I suggest that images should be dynamic if included at all and should be in the article for the place, not in this summary. I also renamed this section on the talk page as 'Postcode Areas' to match the current title of the related section on the main article. There are still many out-of-date comments on the sections, and no comments have dates against them, for example ,'I will be working on this next week'. PeterIto 04:22, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Here's my plan: Drop that whole section. Maybe create a new page called UK towns by postcode without map images for those who are interested. On this page just have a list of top 10 cities by population, again without map images (This list is useful for non-UK people looking for city map examples and also for the >90% of the UK population who live in one of the top ten cities) Any other towns/villages can be found on the wiki by drilling down by county. You can't expect every town to be listed on this page. For the massive minority of cases where people may be struggling to find a town by county... they could always use the wiki search. Or maybe Blackburn could be listed under Manchester too? Harry Wood 16:22, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Rather than an additional page of large cities, why not replace the table with categories... [SNIP]... SK53 16:15, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
It looks like we went ahead and created an additional page of UK towns by postcode, so I'm cheekily cutting SK53's comment and moving it to Talk:UK towns by postcode where it might possibly still be useful -- Harry Wood (talk) 23:00, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
