Reducing article to a stub

Given that there is a long-running dispute on whether to use this tag or source:maxspeed=* to define the type of speed limit I have reduced both articles to brief summaries and created a clear links to Speed limits. Lets have any further discussion on that page. PeterIto (talk) 01:27, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Issues with explicitly tagging maxspeed in addition to maxspeed:type

Wiki currently states that "maxspeed:type=* should be accompanied by a maxspeed=* tag", which seems to be disputed as it brings several problems - adding just maxspeed=* results in incorrect data being introduced - if they are being added, all other maxspeed tags (like maxspeed:hgv=* etc. that differ in speed limit) must be added too!, possibility of implicit/explicit data being out of sync, issues when law changes, etc. See https://github.com/streetcomplete/StreetComplete/discussions/5131 for discussion with more details about the problem --mnalis (talk) 13:39, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Tagging a maxspeed=* never implies that the speed limit is the same for all modes of transportation.
You don't have to tag all of these modes, but it is considered desirable to add the main maxspeed=* when using maxspeed:type=*. In case the law changes, the redundancy is actually a feature: you can spot the discrepancy and go check if traffic signs have been changed as well: traffic signs may have been added to the road to opt-out of the default speed limit change.
In some cases, a maxspeed:type=* can only be used in one specific zone:traffic=*. In this case it is desirable to add the zone:traffic=* tag as well.

Propose colons as maxspeed separator for zones

The Wikipage should be more specific about the colon as separator between zone and the maxspeed value. Currently most users are using CC:zone## and some are using CC:zone:##. I propose to propose the version with two colons, because they are easier to parse and read. --phobie m d 12:02, 30 June 2025 (UTC)

I also would have loved to see just one way to express this situation (there are upwards of six at the moment). That said, according to taginfo, the double-colon version doesn't even appear on page one. The situation is similar for source:maxspeed (taginfo). The effort for parsing seems to be comparable. So, based on usage, it seems we should rather go for the single-colon version. --Wolfbert (talk) 13:13, 30 June 2025 (UTC)
If we are going to change the tagging of zones, I would instead suggest to simplify it to just maxspeed:type=zone. Like maxspeed:type=sign, the numeric value is already in maxspeed=* and the country code is not needed (zonal speed limit signs work the same in all countries that have them). --JeroenvanderGun (talk) 19:47, 30 June 2025 (UTC)
Funny that you mention it. In Austria, we're just trying to get rid of this. Not that it's particularly bad, but we have e.g. zone, AT:zone, AT:zone30 and AT:zone:30, not to mention zone:maxspeed. AT:zone30 is in line with the wiki and the redundancy will at least help detect partial changes. The term zone is ambiguous though. There are local and city-wide speed zones, pedestrian zones and shared zones, to name a few. --Wolfbert (talk) 12:15, 1 July 2025 (UTC)
