Talk:New server and fund raising drive 2011

15 k£ is a lot of money for a server with the specs you describe.

Dont get me wrong, I will happily support OSM financially, I just think it is overpriced. Or is the 15 k£ also for other things?

Anyway, if enough money is raised, I suggest buying two new servers. That way, it would also be possible to test database clustering rather than just replication.

The main cost we face is in the hard disks, they are terribly expensive. We sourced quotes from a few suppliers and they come out very similar - if you know of somewhere we can get a server of the same specs for cheaper, please let us know! Out of the £15k approximated £2k is contingency for this server purchase and some other, lower profile, hardware that we're looking to buy. Since the immediate aim of this server is to serve as a hot-spare option for the main database server, it needs to be sufficiently powerful to cope with the current load on smaug. When we have the new server, we will in fact have the two servers that you are suggesting for testing database clustering. Obviously having two small servers, neither of which is powerful enough to run OSM, doesn't help us with any kind of resiliency. Gravitystorm 14:16, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for elaborating. I have done some more checking, and it actually does seem like a fair price. As for the number of servers, I was not suggesting buying two smaller servers instead of one big, but to go beyond the k£ 15 and buy two big servers.
