Proposal talk:Refine departures board tagging

Real-time

*:type=* and *=mixed are not clear, and adds no meaning. Use departures_board:realtime=countdown or departures_board:realtime=exact, and departures_board:realtime:countdown=yes + departures_board:realtime:exact=yes for both/ --- Kovposch (talk) 08:45, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Maybe departures_board:realtime=yes/countdown/exact/no would be better? I'm not sure if a separate tag for each one is needed. Dimitar155 (talk) 09:40, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
@Kovposch I've reworked the proposal, let me know if it's better. Dimitar155 (talk) 10:26, 9 October 2022 (UTC)

Stops

Although I mentioned it, it's not highly necessary and relevant here. It can be reserved for future. --- Kovposch (talk) 08:45, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

I will leave it as it is for now. If there are objections against it, I will remove it. Dimitar155 (talk) 09:40, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Message

Resolved

Not sure if it has to be namespaced in departures_board:realtime=*. Could be departures_board:variable_message=* inspired from traffic_sign=variable_message. --- Kovposch (talk) 08:45, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Seems like a good idea. I will update it. Dimitar155 (talk) 09:40, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Spelling

Resolved

Should it be *:analogue=* or *:analog=*? Elsewhere display=analog is used.

Analogue is the British spelling while analog is the American spelling. I will update it. Dimitar155 (talk) 09:40, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Announcements =

Resolved

The board doesn't play a voice. departure_boards:speech_output=* should be limited to when the board itself has such a button for the visually impaired. It should not be used for station announcements. --- Kovposch (talk) 08:45, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

It depends. Some boards have integrated speakers and can say "Bus 42 towards X is coming in Y minutes.". It's usually found on bus and tram stops but not in larger railway stations (where they are multiple speakers since the platforms can be quite long) Dimitar155 (talk) 09:40, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
I've dropped that tag from the proposal. Dimitar155 (talk) 19:37, 28 September 2022 (UTC)

Complicated

To be honest, the massive increase in the number of tags required seems complicated and will put people off from tagging this features at all.

Is it really necessary to deprecate departures_board values? Can't new tags just refine the values of departures_board rather than replace them? eg something more like this:

departures_board=realtime departures_board:analog=no departures_board:realtime:type=exact_time departures_board:realtime:next_stops=yes departures_board:custom_messages=yes

TimRed (talk) 11:37, 28 September 2022 (UTC)
I haven't thought of that variant, assuming your suggestion is to use departures_board=yes/analog/realtime/no instead of departures_board:analog and departures_board:realtime. That will allow a bit more further simplification (like moving departures_board:realtime:type to departures_board:realtime). Dimitar155 (talk) 19:50, 28 September 2022 (UTC)
@TimRed I've reworked the proposal, let me know if it's better. Dimitar155 (talk) 10:26, 9 October 2022 (UTC)

Realtime boards that show departure times based on timetable

Re: https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/feature-proposal-rfc-deprecate-passenger-information-display/4881/19 It seems like some boards in Poland and Germany (possibly in other countries as well) show exact times when there is no real time information (due to malfunctioning GPS of the vehicle or lacking internet connection of the vehicle). It looks like it can be represented using `departures_board:realtime`. Dimitar155 (talk) 21:26, 6 November 2022 (UTC)
