I have created this page to explain my usage of guidepost=simple. I know of the new page : guidepost=* But I'm still not satisfied with the proposed way of tagging, so, until better, I'll keep on tagging it the simple way. sletuffe (talk) 14:05, 12 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Others (not many) have used information=way_marker Brian de Ford (talk) 09:54, 11 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

There is much higher usage of information=route_marker. mnalis (talk) 16:21, 20 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I am sorry, but this is nonesence. For the cases you are mentioning we already have https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:information%3Droute_marker or https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/DE:Tag:information%3Dtrail_blaze. And if you want to specify where the markings are located, you can use the `support=` tag. DeFra85 (talk) 22:05, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Deprecation?

What does this tag express? That the guidpost is just a simple one? This could be a missunderstanding with the meaning of {{key|guidepost]].

taginfo: guidepost=bicycle used 6972 times, guidepost=hiking used 2648 times

As I understand guidepost=* is made for the main usage of the guidepost an not for constructiv style of the object.

What about using guidepost:style=* for that?

@EinKonstanzer Sorry, I didn't mean to reply to your post, but rather to the wiki in general. DeFra85 (talk) 22:07, 23 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I've understood guidepost=simple to mean that the guidepost content is so simple (i.e. lacking in information) that one cannot determine whether it is guidepost=bicycle or guidepost=hiking or something else. E.g. if it is just a simple colored circle or arrow, without any text or pictograms.
I definitely agree it is not related to its construction, as we have e.g. support=* or marker=* for those purposes.
I personally would prefer tagging such "simple" cases as information=route_marker instead -- and reciprocally, if route marker had an icon of bicycle or hiker or horse etc. (see its examples page), I'd retag it as information=guidepost instead or route marker if I encountered it.
It should be noted however that there exists SCEE quest asked on both information=route_marker and information=guidepost which will ask "For which sport is this guidepost intended?" and will tag guidepost=simple if user does not see any matching sport and clicks "It's just a simple guidepost" answer. That might be the one of the causes for this tag growth.
Personally I'd prefer if that SCEE Quest was asked only on guideposts (and not on route markers) and that the tagging is changed as explained above (and text of that answer changed to e.g. "It is not a guidepost, just a simple route marker").
Then this wiki entry for guidepost=simple could also be marked as unclear/deprecated and alternatives explained.
But I don't know what would be the support for that idea? mnalis (talk) 15:04, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
