leisure=golf_course states that sport:golf should be implied for golf courses, so it might indeed be that there is not much use for this tag.

However, I think that what this tag can be used in addition is for designating a driving - you (kind of :-) ) play golf there, but it is not a golf course. See my comment at Talk:Tag:leisure=golf_course about that as well.

Another use for the tag would be for indoor golf, and for golf simulators. Indoor golf is often a (short) driving range and some (artifical grass) practice facilities, while a simulator means you have enough space to make a swing and shoot the ball for 2-3 meters into some kind of wall, while sensors compute and the simulator visualises how your shot would have been. Not sure how these should be tagged.

From the current page: Perhaps this is a bit like with sport=swimming for places where you can go swimming which may not be swimming pools.

==> It is in some way, a difference IMHO is that swimming can be done in really many more places - pools, rivers, lakes, sea/ocean, ...,

Some of these are practice for the sport golf rather than the sport itself. This could lead to the treatment by some similar to sport=cricket_nets. Unfortunately there is no present tag for practice/training areas. Warin61 (talk) 06:51, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
Another use for the tag .. in shops that sell golfing equipment? Warin61 (talk) 06:53, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
