it is the plural of main (as in pipe) but is used as the name of the normal water supply network see https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/mains-water https://educalingo.com/en/dic-en/mains-water and lots more. SimonPoole (talk) 17:24, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
It's ok that both exists. Nevertheless, this value says that the hydrant is connected to a pipe called water main. Should we have used main_pipe instead? Fanfouer (talk) 17:28, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
