Surface Tag

The use of the surface=* to indicate sand/mud/rocks/pebble could be usefull. Could be a useful addition to the main page. Warin61 (talk) 04:02, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

Good idea: surface=mud has been used over 500 times, and surface=sand has been used over 400 times (http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/RDz). Other values are rare. I've mentioned those 2. --Jeisenbe (talk) 06:23, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Use on Relations

The wiki page says this can't be used on relations, is that correct ? Dmgroom (talk)

Do you have an example where a relation should be used? An islet that is surrounded by a tidal flat would be a good example. If you do have such an example I would go ahead and map it with the relation and link it here. "Any tags you like." Warin61 (talk) 21:56, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
To be honest since a tidal flat is the area between MHWS and low water then almost any tidal flat could be mapped with a relation using the coastline way as one outer way, and another way closing the relation. An example would be relation 8065342 Dmgroom (talk)
Good point. Warin61 (talk) 01:58, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
Tidal flats are frequently mapped as type=multipolygon relations, but these are a type of area, same as a closed way is an area and not a line. --Jeisenbe (talk) 06:15, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
So you agree that the wiki page is incorrect when it shows that it can't be used on relations? Dmgroom (talk)
No. A multipolygon is always an area. The tag wetland=tidalflat is not used on other types of relations, such as type=route or type=restriction or type=waterway. So the correct setting is "onArea = yes, onRelation = no": use it on areas, not on (other types) of relations. Sorry, I know this is confusing. --Jeisenbe (talk) 00:04, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
