@Maro21: Can you explain how this edit is related to backward compatibility? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 00:38, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Does a license have to be explicitly granted for the Carto screenshot?

After my last edit and summary of the information in a box, the following questions came to me:

In the case of the old license CC-BY-SA-2.0, which is also the wiki license, it is obvious that the screenshot should also be used under this license.

But in the case of the new ODbL license, there will probably be a conflict between CC-0 of the map style and ODbL of the map data. If CC-0 were adopted for the screenshot, there is a risk that the naming of the data source (the reference to the OSM contributors) would be omitted. Does this mean that a special license (e.g. CC-BY ...) that requires and enables attribution must be set for the ODbL-based screenshot? --Chris2map (talk) 13:36, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

If screeshoot taking itself was a creative work qualifying to generate copyright then we would need people making them also declare some license or at least confirm authorship. But that seems quite absurd, and except rare cases I would argue that no work above TOO happened. But maybe I am not paranoid enough? Either way at least in my current processing (notifying people and so on) I exclude maps and screenshots as these are too confusing Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 06:04, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

Remove == license header == from template

Could we please remove license header from template so handling is identical to all the other license templates? It leads to header double if used on file pages with more complex license informations. @Maro21 and Mateusz Konieczny: --Chris2map (talk) 11:27, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

I designed this template with simplicity in mind. So that you don't have to type == {{int:license-header}} =={{ODbL OpenStreetMap}} by hand, you can easily type {{OSM Carto screenshot}} from the keyboard and not worry about headers or remembering to add a header and category. There are currently no double headers because where there were, I removed them and am monitoring. Regarding "complex license information" - this template is only for cases where it is a section of the map in this style and nothing else, so other licenses will not occur. Therefore, it is not for such cases: File:Map compare sagrina.png. I'm in the process of cleaning up inappropriate uses of this template, as it was misused many times during my long break from the Wiki, which I will also add to the documentation soon. maro21 12:46, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
I haven't figured it out yet. Could you please explain to me why this template cannot be used on every screenshot image containing a map in OSM Carto style? Do you interpret it like that the whole screenshot must only be OSM Carto? So if one makes a screenshot of OpenStreetMap.org this template should not be used? But without a webpage or application that displays the map you can't see the map. So each OSM Carto screenshot is a screenshot of a displaying application with the map, may it be OSM.org, Geofabrik tools, JOSM, etc. The template itself says "This screenshot contains OpenStreetMap Carto rendering." --Chris2map (talk) 20:33, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
I wasn't the one who added it "This screenshot contains" :). That wasn't my intention. Yes, the whole screenshot must only be OSM Carto, without modifications. For any other maps which "contain" OSM Carto style one can use just {ODbL OpenStreetMap}. My idea was to collect map fragments in the same style in one category. I will add more details soon, I'm preparing more accurate documentation. maro21 23:11, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
That wasn't clear to me. Hence the confusion. So you're concerned with classification into categories. Then we'll probably have to create a second template for the screenshots that aren't just pure maps. How about "Template:OSM Carto" or "Template:Screenshot containing OSM Carto map"? --Chris2map (talk) 18:37, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
