Your changes to advertising tagging

Over the past few months, you have slowly but surely rewritten all advertising-related content in the wiki to match your ideas. This includes most prominently:

  • Key:advertising
  • Template:Proposed:Map Features:advertising (which also silently changes the content of the established advertising proposal, giving the impression that the proposal did include these ideas originally).
  • the Taglist version of the Map features template for advertising, despite the fact that the Taglist conversion explicitly tries to not make content changes: "It seems best to separate (any discussion about) the technical process of switching to Taglists from (discussion about) the tags that should be displayed. Therefore, at this stage we will set up the Taglists for each page in such a way that it displays exactly the same tags as before."

You have also created the page Advertising, again based on your idea of doing things.

This goes counter to the idea that the wiki should reflect community consensus, rather than individual opinions. The Key:advertising page was created only after the proposal had already gained traction in the community. Your changes to this page, however, do not reflect established practice among mappers, but your desire to establish your own ideas. The right tool to do that, though, are proposals, discussions, and other forms of communication.

I realize that I should have contacted you about this sooner, as you have invested a lot of work so already. However, I must still ask you to revert your changes for now. Offer your ideas to review from the community, and let them decide whether they want to adopt your ideas. If and when that happens, you can still restore the current versions of the various pages you edited, so your work would not be lost. Please let's do this the right way. --Tordanik 16:44, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

Hello Tordanik,
Yes these pages have been changed, some addings have been made, mostly by me, but not only by me. Mostly they are addings, and nothing has been removed as far as I know.
I have been preparing these changes over the last year, quite slowly as I have no much time, have been discussing changes with local group of OSM contributors, some other changes with originator of this advertising page, some other changes with other people who are interested with this thematic. I discuss one change on 'tagging' list, quite recently (the one related to 'visibility'). I documented (http://pdfext.github.io/OSM/advertising/) before discussing, discussed (as far as I could organized it) before modifying, so these modifications do not reflect only my own ideas. Modifications were brought on wiki pages very slowly as you noticed, it took several months to do so, and I wanted to take into account potential remarks or reviews from others, but they were none so far. And this tagging has been tested along the way.
Addings were made mainly on "technical descriptions" of advertising devices, which are not so controversial, but of course there can be several ways to to that, in any case time was spent to verify that the advertising devices already is OSM were not tagged as far as these technical descriptions are concerned, therefore, unless I missed something big, it should not go against established practices among mappers. But they are of course many ways of doing things among mappers.
I admit that discussing all points on 'tagging' list would have been the best process to do. Note that I adopted this way of doing recently. But It is not too late to do so, and we can from now organize several threads of discussion on tagging list, on all of the points added ; what are the precise points you want to discuss ? For example let's have one discussion on 'support', one on 'animated', one on 'size', and so on ? So I m ready to take into account your concern. Undoing everything is quite difficult, because of imbrications of multiples pages changes, and translations, it is not a single page and a single change, but ok we must be ready to consider any changes coming from the community. All of that needs to be improved, and reinforced. In any case they are still a lot of things to do. Let's do it. I'm still a recent OSM contributor and have still a lot to learn.

File:Column.svg = File:Column 3.svg?

Hey,

as far as I can see, these two files are the exact same. File:Column 3.svg is not used in any page of the wiki. Can I request a deletion of this file?

answer

This one File:Column 3.svg is used in a preset (see below), so I would prefer to keep it. But I understand that I should not have duplicate like this.

general situation

I was looking at Special:ListDuplicatedFiles and found multiple files that were duplicates. Maybe the JOSM-Template could get changed once for all of these cases?

Need FR help with long descriptions

Hi, I was migrating key/tag descriptions to the new Data items, and noticed there are some French wiki pages with descriptions longer than 250 characters. Could you help make them shorter? Without it, iD editor will show strange truncated version. Also, please make sure there are no wiki markup in the description. (Feel free to help with the English ones too if you have time) Thanks!!! --Yurik (talk) 06:24, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

Questions about advertising tags

I moved the questions and add more to advertising discussion, so it is more open to everyone. Feel free to remove my post here!

A more complete mapcontrib template

I'm doing a more complete mapcontrib template (in french) to ease contributions on advertising devices by people outside OSM traditional contributors. I'm a beginner in OSM community, so if you have comments or advices that would prevent mistakes caused by this template, let me know!

WikiCamp L'Escandille

Main article: FR:WikiCamp L'Escandille

Il vaut mieux, je pense, utiliser une page complète pour l'événement pour les MàJ et le calendrier. Discuter si besoin. --Benoit Soubeyran (talk) 21:38, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Attribution

Hello! And sorry for bothering you, but descriptions of files you uploaded need to be improved.

You have uploaded files which are licensed as requiring attribution. But right now attribution is not specified properly.

Please, ask for help if something is confusing or unclear in this message.

Please, fix that problem with this uploads - note that images with unclear licensing situation may be deleted.

Attribution may be missing completely or just be specified in nonstandard way, in either case it needs to be improved. Note that using CC-BY files without specifying attribution is a copyright violation, which is often unethical and unwanted. So clearly specifying required attribution is needed if license which makes attribution mandatory was used.

If it is applying to your own work which not based on work by others - then you can select own user name or some other preferred attribution or even change license to for example {{CC0-self}}

For your own work: ensure that it is clearly stated at file page that you created image/took the photo/etc

For works by others - please ensure that there is link to the original source which confirms license and that you used proper attribution, or that source is clearly stated in some other way.

Especially for old OSM-baded maps, made from data before license change on 12 September 2012 you should use "map data © OpenStreetMap contributors" as at least part of attribution

For old OSM Carto maps, which predate license change on 12 September 2012 you can use a special template {{OSM Carto screenshot||old_license}}

answer

I added attributions for all files, thanks for the notification, and thanks for your patience ! Barnes38 (talk) 11:30, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
