Wayside is a web map for finding the small public amenities that are well mapped in OpenStreetMap but hard to look up anywhere else: public toilets, drinking water, benches, playgrounds, recycling containers, post boxes and around twenty more categories. It queries Overpass API for the visible area and shows one category at a time, or a saved group of them.
It runs in a browser with no account and no app to install, and is free to use.
Features
- Around twenty-five categories of small public amenity, searched live in the visible map area
- Opening hours, fees, step-free access, changing tables and the rest of the surveyed detail shown for each point
- Doors marked on the building a point is inside, so a toilet in a shopping centre can be walked to rather than circled
- Modelled traffic noise for places worth lingering in, benches, picnic tables, viewpoints in selected cities
- Category presets for a trip: camping, van life, road trip, family, dog walk
- One tap from any point into the iD editor with the object selected, to correct what is wrong
- Last survey and last edit dates shown, so a point can be judged on how fresh it is
- Interface in English, Finnish, German, French, Italian and Spanish
Coverage
Worldwide on the map, which searches wherever it is pointed. The prerendered city pages cover around 150 cities, and the modelled noise layer a smaller selection of those.
Data and licence
Point data is from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the ODbL. The base map is CARTO Voyager, drawn from vector tiles.
The source code is under the MIT licence. The OpenStreetMap extract committed alongside it, and the derived noise tiles, stay under ODbL 1.0 as derivative databases. The repository also contains a Docker setup for a self hosted Overpass API instance holding only the tags these categories need.
