Proposal

A  Video wall (also called an LED Wall) is a large digital screen, typically constructed out of smaller  LED panels. Digital screens are used to show video, film, TV, camera feeds, advertising content, or other digital content. They are especially common at large events, and at events venues like stadiums and outdoor cinemas.

This proposal suggests a new tag, man_made=video_wall, which may be used for any kind of digital screen (not just advertising). The type of video shown on the screen does not affect whether you can map it or not.

Rationale

There is already a tag for screens used for advertising purposes: advertising=screen, but not for screens used for other purposes.

Tagging

Draw a way Way, and tag it as man_made=video_wall.

Notes:

  • You may combine man_made=video_wall with barrier=wall only if the LED wall sits on the ground and therefore acts as a barrier. See the examples section below
  • You may combine man_made=video_wall with advertising=screen if its sole purpose is to show advertising material.
  • For double sided screens, you can add sides=2. By default, sides=1 is implied. Based on feedback, there is no way to indicate which side is the front.

Other useful tags to use in combination are support=*, operator=*, height=*, min_height=* (see examples below)

Examples

  1. Technically the screen is hanging off the truss, but is nevertheless sitting at ground level
  2. Keep in mind Good Practice: do not map LED walls set up temporarily for an event

Special Cases

Height

Use the tags height=* and min_height=* to map the height of the screen. See the page min_height=* for a good explanation of how to use tags

Rendering

none proposed.

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. In my opinion the revisions have made the proposal worse. Like a cliff, the way direction should indicate which side the video is on, but still it's better to have this proposal than nothing. --Aharvey (talk) 01:54, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

  • I abstain from voting but have comments I have comments but abstain from voting on this proposal. What about sad cases of massive billboard screen showing ads? I think that advertising=billboard is a valid combination, not only Tag:advertising=screen. "if its sole purpose is to show advertising material" vs "A screen used purely for advertising" is conflicting, there are cases of screen with showing ads as their sole purpose, but showing not only ads. Either for legal reasons (they are not allowed to put ad so they lie that it is say "information for tourists" or "documenting local businesses". Or baiting people by occasionally showing useful things.) "the way direction should indicate which side the video is on" I would assume that it is true by default for all things with a direction. • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. Re: above opinions: I was thinking it's better to clean up advertising=* in other proposals. This is a device, that doesn't need to be tie to a purpose or rendering yet. There was also a problem with advertising=* suggested to be used under a man_made=advertising that may not make as much sense. ---- Kovposch (talk) 09:44, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. We should be able to use it also on nodes. Avoid the need to use an error prone practice as a way direction to express which side is the viewing one. Use a similar subkey scheme as for advertising=billboard which has proven to work just fine with direction=*, sides=*, orientation=* and visibility=* among others. Not addressed is the often very temporary installation. These screens should not be mapped, same as we don't map mobile containers or caravans as buildings. We shouldn't map screens installed on parked trucks or other non permanent installations (which is the case for many events). Good initiative and key allocation, but needs some more work to support it's use as global guideline.--Bert Araali (talk) 14:46, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
Hi @Bert Araali:, we can update it to allow nodes. Also, the temporary installations case has been addressed: "Keep in mind Good Practice: do not map LED walls set up temporarily for an event". Maybe we should put this sentance in bold? --Kylenz (talk) 03:24, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
I've noticed, I stopped reading after looking at the examples, it's very hidden. I suggest adding it to Tagging or even more prominent to the description. When allowing it to be used on nodes, I would also prefer to avoid the word "large" in the description. What is large, what is the threshold. Some venues might use smaller screens, even large TV's for the same purpose. I suggest not to put any restrictions, leave it to a mapper which sizes he considers significant to map. I will not change my vote (not good practice), doubt if it will stop the proposal from proceeding and trust you add nodes. Good job and communication. --Bert Araali (talk) 16:17, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
  • I abstain from voting but have comments I have comments but abstain from voting on this proposal. I do not think a video wall fits the definition of barrier=wall – this really should have been fixed between the votes. Also, the proposal now lacks a suggestion on how to define which direction the screen is facing, and if the obvious solution is used (direction=*), there's no longer a reason not to allow the tag to be used on nodes. --Tordanik 19:15, 10 August 2021 (UTC) --Tordanik 19:15, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
Hi @Tordanik:, I will try to take a photo of the back of a ground-level LED wall - the frame is usually made of aluminium or steel truss and concrete counterweights, which are often covered with blank aluminium panels to hide the cables and controllers. This creates a flat, solid wall from behind which is capable of holding several tonnes. This is the only situation where it is acceptable to tag it as barrier=wall because it quite literally is mounted to a wall.
