This tag is used to add suburb specification to addresses. This is either disambiguation where unrelated streets with the same name are located in the same settlement (e.g. in Russia), or where suburb (or an equivalent administrative or geographic division) is used as an official part of address in addition or in place of city (e.g. in Australia and New Zealand).

In some cases within the same settlement may be located streets with the same name. Typically, in mentioning addresses are made additions to the street names to specify the suburb.

Sometimes one of the streets may be cited without specification, and all others with the specification. Sometimes all streets are named with the specification.

Tagging

As usual when setting an address there should be an addr:street=* matching the name=* of the respective street. Then addr:suburb=* with the same value must be added on both the address to set up and the street.

Note that it's uncommon to use addr=* tag on streets and the same tag in the addresses with the purpose to create a match. If setting the suburb name is not necessary for solving disambiguation use other tags like addr:hamlet=*, addr:district=*, addr:subdistrict=*.

Usage

Australia

Australian addresses use suburbs and localities in place of cities and this tag is set to the name of the suburb or locality an address is in, but its usage is optional where the suburb boundaries have been fully mapped. See Australian Tagging Guidelines/Australian features#Addressing.

Japan

On addresses in Japan, this tag is used for wards (区 ku) in cities that have them (e.g. Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo). Tokyo's 23 special wards (特別区 tokubetsu-ku) are handled as addr:city=* instead, as these are considered city-level subdivisions in contrast to regular city wards.

New Zealand

In New Zealand, all addresses have a locality, which are tagged using a mix of addr:suburb=* and addr:hamlet=* for legacy reasons. This confusing mix of tags is slowly being phased out.

See also Import/New Zealand Street Addresses (2021).

Russia

This tag is used in Russia, where two unrelated streets may share the same name but located at different parts of a settlement. Usually the suburb name is a parenthetical appended after a street name.

For example, these are two different addresses in Saint Petersburg.

"3 Sofiyskaya street, Saint Petersburg" (Russian: Софийская улица, 3, Санкт-Петербург)

"3 Sofiyskaya street (Shuvalovo), Saint Petersburg" (Russian: Софийская улица (Шувалово), 3, Санкт-Петербург)

The way of the first address is name=Софийская улица with the house with addr:housenumber=3 + addr:street=Софийская улица

The way of the second street in Shuvalovo is name=Софийская улица + addr:suburb=Шувалово with the house with addr:housenumber=3 + addr:street=Софийская улица + addr:suburb=Шувалово.
