Grass covered ground. As with all surface tags, surface=grass is used to provide additional information about the physical surface of roads/footpaths/etc, in this case indicating a grass-covered surface.
Grassy paths can often turn into surface=dirt or become overgrown and disappear. Some paths change during year between surface=dirt and surface=grass, in such a case it is better to select the dominant surface.
Sport use
surface=grass is extensively used on leisure=pitch elements. As of early 2026, soccer pitches are by far the most common, with over 114,000 mapped globally.[1] Other common sports include cricket, rugby union, baseball, American football, bowls, and equestrian.
