Your project
This is an opportunity for you to tell us about your project. In this section we'd like to hear about your community, which local challenge your project addresses, what you plan to do and how, your sustainability plan, and how you plan to share your stories.
Describe the local challenge your project is addressing
In this section please describe in detail the challenge that your project addresses. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.
Acute growth of urbanization of Nairobi Metropolis, the Capital city of Kenya and the heart of Kenya’s economy has led to the rise of illegal waste disposal in Nairobi which has become a major threat to the city and the environment. Cases of epidemics like cholera have been reported in areas where these landfills and disposal are located. In 2020 the Nairobi population was 4,735,000, a 3.93% increase from 2019. The current Nairobi Air Quality index is 20.9 µg/m³ which is estimated to reduce in the coming years. It is evident this has contributed negatively to climate change due to increased release of greenhouse gases thus leading to global warming. In efforts to mitigate environmental challenges . The project seeks to To utilise Geospatial tools and community generated data to map both legal and illegal in Nairobi
Describe your project
In this section, please provide specific details about your mapping objectives. This should include: how you will contribute to help solve the local challenge you are addressing, what you aim to achieve with funding, what volume of mapping you plan to complete and how, and the number individuals are you aiming to include in mapping activities. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.
The Project seeks
- To utilise Geospatial tools and community generated data to map both legal and illegal dumpsites in Nairobi, identifying the exact location, amount, and type of garbage. This is important because it will provide guidelines to the appropriate bodies. With this project, better plans and more a structured waste system can be made and enforced.
- To enhance community data literacy through community engagement to acquire community generated data. Hence individuals can use the maps and data to better respond to curb environment related challenges.
Describe your sustainability plan
In this section please describe how your activities will continue post-funding. If you are applying for funding to purchase equipment, explain who will store/use the equipment you purchase, and if you have long term sustainability plans for your community's development. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.
At the end of the project: Through social media, we will engage the general community, by using crowdsourcing platforms like OpenLitterMap to map trash sites in other towns and cities at zero-cost. We will continue engaging the project’s stakeholders to work in other towns around the country. The purchased devices will be stored by OSM Kenya’s steering committee for use in future fieldwork programs.
What are your community defined project goals, and how do you define project success?
Please explain you project goals. This can include: setting goals such as "we will train X number of new mappers", "we will register as a legal entity", or "the data will be used by X", and why these goals are important to your community such as "we intent to be legally registered so that we can receive more grant funding in the future", "we intend to engage X number of women in mapping activities so that we can empower local women" or "we want to build a partnership with X so that our data will be used and trusted". We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.
Project Goals:
- To build capacity of OSM community through training and field work ensuring gender inclusion of 50/50.
- To develop the technical capacity of 30 new mappers in field mapping using OSMAnd and KoboToolbox
- To Upload mapped and collected data is uploaded on OpenStreatMap and HDX for public accessibility.
- To Strengthen community data literacy through community engagement in the project and feedback collection process.
- To Identify both illegal and legal dumpsites and landfills in Nairobi.
The Project will be termed successful if the set goals are achieved and
- Legal and illegal landfills and dumpsites in Nairobi are clearly distinguished.
- Data collected is used to make informed decisions towards environmental conservation.
- Data collected is open and accessible to the public on OSM, HDX and other platforms.
- OSM Kenya continues to map the rest of the landfills and dumpsites in Kenya even when the Project.
- 100 women in the community are trained in the use of OSM and actively utilizing it.
What are your community's long term goals?
Please give describe your community's vision. This can include: where you see your community in five years time, how you want your data to be used, future partnerships you'd like to establish, or how you would like your community to grow (or not!). We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.
OSM Kenya aims to create a vibrant community of OpenStreetMap contributors and users in Kenya and provide a platform where members can exchange ideas and support each other. In the years to come, we hope to fully map the country on OpenStreetMap and to strongly advocate for its use within different groups such as government, universities, and organizations. This can only be done sustainably by mapping while applying OSM in creating solutions that we face locally. By working on similar projects, we will create an open and diverse community of OpenStreetMap contributors in Kenya, develop and support local initiatives that are aimed at improving OpenStreetMap in Kenya, and promote the use of open data, including OpenStreetMap and FOSS countrywide. We hope to engage with different organizations, communities and government institutions as we continue to grow.
List the tools you intend to use during your project and why
Please describe which tools you plan to use to collect, update, clean, or store you data and why. For example: "we plan to use HOT's Tasking Manager to coordinate volunteers" or "we will upload our data to X platform because..." We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.
We will use for mobile-based tools for data collection: Kobo Collect to capture community feedback, landfills, images of the landfills, GPS locations of official trash bins. iD editor and JOSM for mapping of roads and landfills boundaries through mapathons. Desktop and web GIS platforms for data analysis and visualisation.
Please give examples of how you will use share your stories with others. This can include: how you will publicise your news, where you will collect media content, how you will use social media channels, and if you will reach out beyond your immediate network to share your stories. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.
- Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube to highlight the project experiences with the rest of the community and other organizations willing to undertake the same kind of project.
- Create story maps about the project challenge, areas affected and the data created.
- Create a network of environmental specialists seeking to address the same challenges.
- Develop web maps and hotspot maps which can be adopted by communities and environmental movements.
Partnerships
Successful applications will demonstrate one or more partnerships with a local data user. Priority will be given to applications for which the data has been requested by a partnering organisation, or where the partner organisation has expressed interest in collecting the data for a specific use or intervention. Example partners include local non-government organisations (NGOs), community based organisations (CBOs), local governments, companies, universities, schools, and other academic institutions.
Describe who will use your data
It is important that the data you generate during the project is useful, and that it will be used to advance humanitarian and/or development challenges locally. In this section, please include: if the data you will be collecting has been requested by a partnering organisation, if there is an established formal relationship with the partnering organisation, if there is an existing MoU between you and the partnering organisation, and how long have you been working with the partnering organisation. If your organisation or community is going to be the data user, please describe how you will use the data, and how it ties in with your organisation's work. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

The project would potentially address the waste management issue that is affecting most cities across the world. Its implementation would be a potential project to learn from Tommy G D Charles (talk) 18:52, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
This is a great project addressing the sustainable development goals (SDG 3, 11, 13) through innovation and Mapping. As we approach the SDG actualization timeline, projects like this one are needed to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs especially in Urban Areas. This project is well designed, timely and I endorse it for full consideration of the grant. (Yusuf: Youthmapper Regional Ambassador)Citizensbyday (talk) 11:50, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
As more urban areas grow in cities around the world, waste management becomes challenging for local governments mainly due to the lack of useful data to support efficient management. This project will create such needed data that is collected by communities in Nairobi. Glad to see the possible regional and international collaborations that might come out of this(if implemented) and I, therefore, fully endorse this project. Laura Mugeha (talk) 01:38, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
Waste disposals and management affect climate change and at the same time, Climate change can also affect how we dispose waste hence the need for better waste management approach. Nairobi is growing rapidly which means more waste being produced from all the activities in the Metropolitan area and this project seeks to use GIS approaches and the power of opendata to map areas of illegal waste disposal which can help the government in strategic decision making on waste management in Nairobi.
