Proposal

This proposal is to create a key bus_guideway=* that can describe all forms of road infrastructure capable of allowing buses to be externally steered.[1] This key would only be applied to way ways with an existing highway=* tag that is routable for buses.

This key would have three possible values to describe the different technologies that exist for bus guidance:

This proposal would deprecate the existing highway=bus_guideway in favor of highway=busway + bus_guideway=kerb.

Rationale

Tagging

Potential Tagging Schema for bus_guideway=*
Tagging Schema Description Photo Deprecates
bus_guideway=optical Optical guidance relies on the principles of image processing. A camera in the front of the vehicle scans the bands of paint on the ground representing the reference path.[1]

bus_guideway=magnetic

Magnets are buried in the roadway, which a bus with sensors can use to form a reference path.[1]

highway=busway + bus_guideway=kerb On kerb-guided buses (KGB) small guide wheels attached to the bus engage vertical kerbs on either side of the guideway.[1]
