National Hydrography Dataset ftype classifies a section of waterway. Appearance in OSM is result of NHD imports.

Keeping this key in OSM is dubious as it is a classification method of objects duplicating OSM classification. For example nhd:fcode=46003 means "intermittent stream". On waterway=stream with intermittent=yes is a pointless duplication. It is unclear is nhd:fcode=46003 on waterway=stream without intermittent=yes should be replaced with intermittent=yes. And on anything else it is confusing and also unnecessary.

However, this key has occasionally proven useful for diagnosing and correcting poor tagging from the original import. For example, hundreds of water=salt areas were deleted after it was discovered that FCodes 39001 and 39003 were mapped to type=salt and later water=salt, but both FCodes were later deprecated by NHD, likely because of data quality issues. See National Hydrography Dataset#Attributes-to-OSM-tags for equivalence assumed in some imports.
