Recommended values

Use this key with the values orchard=meadow_orchard or orchard=plantation. Do not use it to specify the kind of trees cultivated in an orchard - there is trees=* for this purpose.

Wert Bild Beschreibung
orchard=meadow_orchard Traditional meadow orchard with high growing fruit trees and a common distance of 8–12 meters from tree to tree. Fruits may be harvested for juice production or the like but not always are. Usually extensively cultivated.
orchard=plantation Intensively cultivated fruit plantation, usually with low growing fruit trees in densely planted rows for easy harvesting.

The most common value for this key is orchard=meadow_orchard, mainly used in german speaking countries, seeStreuobstwiese.

Differentiation between orchard=meadow_orchard and meadow=meadow_orchard

landuse=orchard + orchard=meadow_orchard describes a meadow orchard which has been planted to make use of the fruits primarily, whereas

landuse=meadow + meadow=meadow_orchard has been introduced to describe meadow orchards where the primary use is the meadow for grazing or hay production. Such meadow_orchards may have only a few scattered trees occasionally and the fruits may not be harvested at all, but there is no clear rule for this distinction.

As this difference is very vague only these two tagging approaches can be seen as exchangeable alternatives. See also the specific wiki pages.
