A related law is the title of the edict or legal text which establishes or regulates an object. This can be used to refer to national laws, local regulations, administrative decisions, international treaties, and similar government documents.

This tag was originally introduced for boundary=* (especially boundary=protected_area), when the boundary is either defined or regulated by law, but the tag may also be useful for other sorts of OSM objects.

How to contribute

The value is free-form text in the local language. One may additionally use related_law:url=* to link to a URL where one can read the legal document, if it is published online by the government.
Although this key expects free-form text, proper citations are preferred as to ease the reuse of this information.

In case you are referring to properly and uniquely identified documents (with like UUID, numerical or date identifiers...), you should document a sub-key like related_law:FR:NOR=* to store those identifiers. Their form will then be documented and possibly checked against a regexp for instance. Using a local context key doesn't require to use related_law=* as to not duplicate the same information.
