information sign

This page describes a key prefix rather than a simple key.

The service:vehicle:*=* tagging scheme was introduced by iD Editor as a way to tag what the type of services a shop=car (dealership) and shop=car_repair object provides, in a way that does not conflict with the existing use of the service=* scheme used for tagging service roads (highway=service).

Combinations

A few of the most used tagging combinations are listed below. More can find at TagInfo.

Key Description Count
service:vehicle:car_repair=* Offers car repair services - please be more specific

service:vehicle:truck_repair=* Offers truck repair services - please be more specific

service:vehicle:oil_change=* An oil replacement is possible here

service:vehicle:tyres=* Tyres are sold and replaced here - does not imply that a punctured tyre might be repaired at this location (but it can be replaced)

Consider using shop=tyres instead if the shop only sells or repairs tyres

service:vehicle:tyres_repair=* Tyres are repaired here - e.g. a punctured tyre might be fixed here. Does not imply that tyres are sold

service:vehicle:new_car_sales=* New cars are sold here.

Not necessary to tag when used in conjunction with shop=car. Selling new cars is implied

service:vehicle:diagnostics=* The problems a car has can be diagnosed here, typically by connecting the car to a specialized computer which gives a status indication. The car might then be fixed at the location or be referred to another repair shop.

service:vehicle:car_parts=* Car parts can be bought here

service:vehicle:brakes=* Offers brake pad and/or rotor replacement. Some shops also offer brake rotor resurfacing

service:vehicle:body_repair=* Offers auto body shop repair and collision repair services

service:vehicle:air_conditioning=* Offers AC/HVAC repair services - e.g. Cabin air filter replacement, leak testing, refrigerant recharging, air compressor replacement

service:vehicle:painting=* Offers painting and/or paint restoration services

service:vehicle:glass=* Offers glass replacement and/or rock chip repair services

service:vehicle:used_car_sales=* Second-hand cars are sold here.

Alternative tagging method: second_hand=*

service:vehicle:inspection=* Specifies whether legally required vehicle inspection may be performed in this shop.

Consider using amenity=vehicle_inspection instead if the shop only preforms inspections

service:vehicle:batteries=*

service:vehicle:electrical=*

service:vehicle:wheels=* Duplicate of service:vehicle:tyres=*

service:vehicle:muffler=*

service:vehicle:transmission=*

service:vehicle:motor=*

service:vehicle:alignment=*

service:vehicle:towing=* Offers car towing services to bring vehicle to shop

Alternatives

The service=* tagging scheme should no longer be used to tag what kind of services a car repair shop provides. The service=* key has mainly been used together with highway=service tag and the different usage in association with shop=car_repair might be confusing to some users. Another alternative is to a car:*=* namespace tagging scheme. None of these schemes has been formally approved, but the service:vehicle=* schema is the most used as of the undiscussed iD implementation. Nobody thought about other vehicles than cars, though. Or what the prefix should be good for.

One technical downside of the service=* tagging scheme for car repair is that it uses a non-freeform key, but because of overloading, undocumented values are ambiguous as to which tagging scheme they apply to.
