status=* is a vague key with a variety of meanings.

Among the top 95% of values, possible interpretations include:

  • condition (bad, medium, good, passable or is this access?), see key condition=*
  • water body class (река, озеро, ручей meaning "river", "lake", "creek" in Russian)
  • physical access (locked, open locked=*)

Tag natural=volcano warns against using this key, and suggests instead being more specific about which status you're describing.

For routes, the use of status=proposed (/alternate/temporary/connection) is incorrect, as while state=proposed was often used instead, the correct key to use is proposed:route=* instead for proposed routes (see here for discussion why lifecycle prefixes are preferred).
